Ashridge Great Barn Wedding Venue in Devon

In February 2026 I visited Ashridge Great Barn, just outside North Tawton in the Devon countryside, around forty minutes from Exeter.

I arrived slightly windswept after driving through a proper Devon storm, but as soon as I stepped out into the valley, it felt calm, private and completely tucked away from the outside world.

Ashridge Great Barn is one of those venues that balances scale and warmth really well. It feels impressive, but never overwhelming. Relaxed, but still special. And most importantly, it feels like a space where couples can genuinely do things their way.

I had the pleasure of being shown around by Cat, one of the wedding coordinators, who was incredibly generous with her time and insight into how weddings actually run here, not just how they look.

If you are at the stage of exploring venues and starting to think about your ceremony too, this might also be a helpful read: What does a wedding celebrant actually do?

Arriving at Ashridge Great Barn

Ashridge sits in its own private valley, surrounded by rolling Devon countryside.

As you arrive, there is this real sense of space and stillness. It feels peaceful, almost like the venue is set slightly apart from everything else, which is something a lot of couples are looking for.

You can immediately picture guests arriving, taking a breath, and settling into the day.

Inside the Great Barn: A Rustic Wedding Space with Real Presence

The barn itself is striking in scale, with centuries of history behind it, but it still feels warm and inviting.

There is space for up to 140 guests seated for the wedding breakfast, with a maximum capacity of 200 overall, so it works beautifully for both intimate celebrations and larger gatherings.

What stood out to me is how adaptable the space is. It looks just as lovely kept simple with fairy lights and candles as it does fully styled with florals, colour and personal details.

It is one of those venues where you are not boxed into a particular look or format, which gives couples real freedom to make it their own.

Wedding Ceremony Options at Ashridge Great Barn

One of the biggest strengths of Ashridge is the choice of ceremony spaces.

Indoor Ceremony in the Barn

The barn itself can host your ceremony, offering a cosy, atmospheric option that works especially well if you want everything under one roof.

Outdoor Ceremonies in the Victorian Gardens

The Victorian gardens offer a beautiful outdoor setting, with two standout options.

The Magic Circle sits within the gardens and feels open, romantic and perfectly positioned for a classic outdoor ceremony.

Then there is the Secret Glade, tucked away in the woodland. This space feels more secluded and intimate, surrounded by trees and nature. It has a really special, almost hidden feel to it.

Flexibility, Flow and a Wedding That Feels Like Yours

Flexibility is something that really stood out during my visit.

Ashridge Great Barn is exclusive use, so the space is completely yours. There are no corkage charges, it is dog friendly, and you have the freedom to choose your own suppliers and decorate the space in a way that reflects you.

That level of trust in couples is something I always notice, and it makes a huge difference to how a wedding day feels.

There is also on the day coordination included, which means you have experienced support behind the scenes keeping everything running smoothly.

Accommodation and a Full Wedding Experience

Ashridge offers on site accommodation for up to nine guests, along with camping options.

This opens things up into more than just a single day celebration. It becomes a full experience.

With exclusive use across a longer period, there is space for a relaxed build up, time with your closest people, and a slower, more enjoyable pace across the whole wedding.

A Venue with History and Heart

The Great Barn itself dates back to medieval times, built using materials sourced directly from the surrounding land.

Over the years it has been adapted and restored, and today it stands as a space that blends history with modern celebrations.

Ashridge also sits on a regenerative farm, with a real focus on sustainability and caring for the land. That connection to the environment is something you can feel when you are there.

It adds another layer of meaning to the setting, especially for couples who are drawn to venues with a story behind them.

Why It Is Worth Visiting Ashridge Great Barn

You can look at photos, scroll through galleries, and get a sense of the space online.

But visiting in person is where it really comes together.

You notice the scale of the barn, the quietness of the valley, the different ceremony spots, and how the whole day could flow from one moment to the next.

A big thank you again to Cat, and the wider team, for such a warm and welcoming visit. It was a real pleasure to see the venue properly and understand how much care goes into each wedding here.

Planning Your Wedding Ceremony at Ashridge Great Barn

As a celebrant, this is a venue I would be genuinely excited to work at.

The Secret Glade would lend itself beautifully to a relaxed, personal ceremony surrounded by nature, while the barn offers a more traditional setting with plenty of atmosphere.

I am also so grateful to be a recommended celebrant at Ashridge Great Barn, and I cannot wait to create ceremonies in this space.
